Beneath Every Brilliant Floor: The Full Story of Mr. JO Eco Underlay

When it comes to epoxy floors, what meets the eye — smooth, glossy, seamless finishes — is only half the story. The other half is hidden below, quietly doing the heavy lifting. That hidden layer is the underlay, and it’s where long-term durability, strength, and finish quality are truly built.
MR. JO Eco Underlay is not just a filler — it’s a foundation, a problem solver, and a performance enhancer designed for today’s high-demand flooring systems.
🧩 The Challenge at Many Sites
Waterproofing failures often stem from an unexpected source: the water added during mixing. On-site dilution with hard water, unmeasured quantities, or inconsistent mixing can compromise the final film.
Even the best epoxy systems can falter if a careless mix leads to chalky coatings, patchy curing, or poor bonding. Especially in large projects, controlling field variables becomes a challenge.
🟢 Why Use an Underlay?
For epoxy flooring systems of 2 mm and above, an underlay serves multiple functions:
- Corrects surface irregularities and levels the substrate
- Builds strength and thickness cost-effectively
- Prepares the floor for smoother, more uniform topcoat application
- Reveals surface defects early for rectification before finishing
- Reduces topcoat consumption and improves adhesion
Think of it as the leveling course in road construction — it doesn’t shine, but the final ride depends entirely on it.
⚡ Meet the Eco Underlay Family
The MR. JO Eco Underlay system is available in three specialized versions — each suited to a different application need:
1. Eco Underlay – iFLO (Flowable Screed)
A highly flowable screed version for easier spreading and better self-leveling. Ideal when you need quick coverage with minimal troweling effort.
- Packaging: (5 + 2.5 + 12.5)
- Mix Ratio (A:B:C): 100:50:250
- Application: Poured and leveled with notched rake and spiked roller
- Recommended for:
- Large, open industrial floors
- Light undulations or minor unevenness
- Quick base preparation for epoxy overlays

2. Eco Underlay – iTMP (Tampable Screed)
A trowel-applied, tampable version designed for covings, ramps, heavier build-ups (5–8 mm), and load zones where impact resistance is key.
- Packaging: (5 + 2.5 + 32.5)
- Mix Ratio (A:B:C): 100:50:650
- Application: Trowel or tamping
- Recommended for:
- Floor edge buildup and covings
- Loading bays, ramps, heavy machinery zones
- Preparation layer before chemical resistant floors
🏭 Where Does Eco Underlay Fit In?
Eco Underlay and its variants are widely used across:
- Industrial warehouses and logistics hubs
- Food and pharma facilities
- Automobile workshops and assembly areas
- Chemical handling zones (when paired with CMR variants)
- Old concrete renovations needing thickness buildup
While 0.5 mm and 1 mm systems don’t typically require an underlay, 2 mm and above benefit significantly from its inclusion, especially in worn, pitted, or high-load areas.
🧱 Application Workflow
- Surface Preparation
– Mechanically grind or shot blast to remove laitance and dust
– Ensure the surface is dry, clean, and oil-free
– Concrete substrate should be at least 25 MPa - Priming
– Use MR. JO Eco Primer, UPS, LVC, or MVC depending on substrate condition - Mixing
– Combine Part A and B thoroughly
– Slowly add Part C (aggregates) until homogeneous
– Use mechanical mixing for consistency - Application
– For flowable versions: pour and spread with a rake, then roll with spiked roller
– For tampable: lay with trowel and compact evenly - Curing
– Walkable in ~24 hours at 25°C
– Full cure in 7 days
– Topcoat can be applied after 24–36 hours

⚠️ Tips & Precautions
- Do not apply if substrate temperature is below 15°C
- Stick to recommended mix ratios — overloading filler will weaken bonding
- Ensure proper de-aeration with spike roller for flowable grades
- Protect freshly laid underlay from dust, foot traffic, and moisture
- Always verify substrate moisture levels if using on damp concrete.
